Resumen: The first part of the paper presents experimental results and theoretical predictions of non-propagating cracks in bending specimens of A515 Grade 70 steel with through thickness cracks and corner cracks. The theoretical predictions were made using the strain intensity factor approach. For that purpose both elastic-plastic and linear elastic analysis at crack tip were carried out using finite element codes. Good correlation was obtained between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions. A fatigue threshold analysis is also presented. The second part of the paper presents a crack closure analysis in the same type of specimens and crack geometries and for R=O and R=-0.4. Values of the crack closure parameter, U, were obtained and the crack growth rate gave a good correlation with the effective value of AK.
