Resumen: This paper presents a study about the propagation of semi-elliptical surface cracks in round bars subjected to the rotating bending. The applicability of Stress Intensity Factors (Mode I) obtained under bending at maximum depth point on surface crack is studied for this type of cracks in rods. The ratio of the length of the surface crack to the crack front depth is found for severa! rod diameters in experimental results. So it is possible to obtain continuously the crack depth if the length of the surface crack is known. A good agreement with experimental results is shown. Therefore, the relation established is expected to be useful in predicting crack growth rates, designing rotor shafts, and establishing inspections intervals.
