Resumen: Crack (or damage) detection in stmctural clements by mcans of dynamic analysis is a research field of increasing interest. The authors have been looking at this technique for some years. and developed a method that allows the detem1ination of crack characteristics in beams. based on the knowledge of the natural frequency variations due to the crack growth. However, one of the problems related to the teclmique under consideration is thc fact that small cracks induce small natural frequency variations and therefore a high degree of accuracy is needed for the tecnique to be reliable. In this paper the authors discuss the alternative or combined use of different modal parameters such as the natural frequencies and the mode shapes either in terms of translation or in terms of rotation. Theoretical examples are presented and discussed and it is shown that rotation mode shapes may be an efficient altemative to detect crack damage in structural elements.
