Resumen: The use of the thermoelastic effect as an experimental stress analysis technique has increased over the last decade. Although quite recent, the technique is commonly used in the qualitative study of stress distributions.lt is used by severa! industries for the stress analysis of prototypes allowing the identification of critica! areas and consequent redesign, contributing for a decrease in the development time of a new product. The evolution of this technique has been towards its use as a quantitative stress analysis too!, rather than just as a qualitative technique. Following that, a number of experiences have been made in arder to find new applications for the technique. In this paper, the evolution of the thermoelastic effect as a stress analysis technique is presented. The basic principies of the technique are highlighted and other techniques are compared. Severa! applications described in Jiterature are presented. Finally, sorne work done by the authors using this technique is presented, namely studies of adhesive and welded joints.
