ATOMISTIC SIMULATION OF THE RESPONSE TO AXIAL ELONGATION OF A <110> COLUMNAR NANOSTRUCTURE OF IRON WITH A NANO-SIZED PENNY-SHAPED TRANSVERSE CRACK

Resumen: The response to tensile elongation of an <011> oriented columnar nanocrystalline pure iron structure at a temperature of 300 K has been simulated by molecular dynamics (MD). The simulated sample contains 4.3·106 atoms and has been subject to free elongation along the <011> axis common to the grains. Fully periodic boundary conditions have been assumed. The grains are randomly oriented around their common <011> direction and the size of their cross section is about 10 nm. The behaviour of a crack-free sample has been compared with the behaviour of an identical sample provided with a penny-shaped nano-crack built as an oblate spheroid of approximate dimensions 5.5×5.5×0.8 nm3 transverse to the line of intersection of three <110> oriented grain boundaries.
