Resumen: As part of the analysis of the risk of fast fracture of PWR vessels, in emergency conditions, a crack arrest study is under way.The first objective of this study is to evaluate the toughness which caracterizes crack arrest through tests on reduced-size specimens. Some tests on a forging steel (A508 c1.3) were conducted in conformity with two experimental methods, one is recommended by the ASTM, the other has been perfected by the Eco le des Mines de Paris. The first method consists in using a mechanical loading on specimens kept under a homogeneous temperature, the second one is based on a thermal loading. The conducted tests proved the limitation of the ASTM experimental procedure. The various arrest toughness values which were obtained were then analysed and compared, between each others, and with values proposed by RCC-M code. The values obtained from ASTM method are superior to Kia values determined from tests based on thermalloading. The latter correspond to the values given in RCC-M code.
