EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENT OF MODE I & II CRITICAL STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR OF STONES

Resumen: Measurement of fracture toughness in rock materials is of interest for applications such as blasting, rock excavation and cutting or earthquake mechanics. This is closely associated with the determination of toughness under conditions other than pure mode I, i.e. modes II or III, in brittle materials. In this paper, we present a set of experiments on samples of Lazonby sandstone and Carrara marble using the cracked Brazilian disk test (CBDT) configuration to determine their mixed mode toughness properties. Disks with a nominal diameter of 52 mm and 15 mm nominal thickness were prepared from the two rocks. The through-notch along one of their diameters consists on a rectangular notch of 2 mm in width and 20 mm in length. These notches, centred in the disk, were machined by using a water jet. The end of the 2 mm-wide notches were sharpened down to 0.25 mm width along 2.5 mm. For each testing condition and material, 3 samples were used. Tests were performed with two different orientations of the notches, one aligned with the applied load direction and the other one with a misorientation of about 23º between notch plane and load direction. The first case was used for obtaining KIc and the second one for KIIc. From these tests it was concluded that for Carrara marble KIc is 1.26±0.08 Mpa?m and KIIc is 1.53±0.06 Mpa?m. For Lazonby sandstone Kic is 0.69±0.06 Mpa?m and KIIc is 0.65±0.05 Mpa?m.
