Resumen: X-ray diffraction analysis has been used to study the evolution of residual stresses during contact fatigue tests of industrial gears of an automotive gearbox, submitted to surface treatments of carbonitriding and shot-peening. Various mechanical tests, such as four poínt monotonic bending and spherical indentation, were performed on laboratory samples and on the gears. Metallurgical investigation and specific stress and strain measurements during or after the mechanical tests, coupled wíth a numerical elasto-plastic analysis, were then used to identify the behaviour of the hardened layers. A numerical model has been developed in order to predict the residual stresses evolut10n and the working lite of the gears under contact fatigue.
