INTERLAMINAR TOUGHENING OF COMPOSITE LAMINATES - FROM MICRO TO NANO

Resumen: Interlaminar delamination is one of the most critical failure modes in laminated fibre composites. With increasing usage of fibre composites, substantial efforts have been continuously put in by many researchers to develop new techniques to increase the interlaminar toughness of composite structures against delamination. These techniques fall within two main approaches: (a) toughening of matrices by the incorporation of micro- or nano-sized fillers, and (b) insertion of throughthickness- reinforcement, stitching or z-pinning, across the laminates. In this paper, we review our major research results on interlaminar toughening of fibre composites due to micro-sized rubber and nanofiller toughened matrices, stitching and z-pinning, and more recently, hierarchical carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown on carbon fibres (CF). Their efficiency, advantages and disadvantages will also be addressed.
