Resumen: The probability of failure in window glass plates is strongly influenced by the distribution of flaws and of tension stresses on the glass surface. If the stress field due to the load in not homogeneus, as it is the case in the glass plates failure must not occur precisely at the location of the major crack. This implíes sorne computatíonal complexity in the analysis of reabílíty and in the estímation of the parameters. In thís paper the fundamentals for a probabilistic approach to such wíndow glass plates ís presented. An experimental research of the preferentíal orientatíon of the flaws is made and the faílure predíction ís applied to a glass beam as a first step for the practical probabilistic design of window glass to failure.
