Resumen: The evolution of crack shape in fatigue crack growth situations can be studied numerically using the finite element method to calculate the stress intensity factor and defining a new crack front considering experimental da/dN-∆,K results. The aim of this work is to study the parameters influencing the accuracy of numerical procedure. The procedure is then applied to variation of crack shape and stable crack shapes in MT specimen geometry. Crack growth has two main phases: a transient phase greatly dependent on initial crack shape and a stable with the crack following preferential paths. The introduction of surface crack closure increases departure from equilibrium stable phases therefore transient phase is extended.
