OVERLOAD EFFECTS IN STRUCTURAL ALUMINIUM ALLOYS

Resumen: Fatigue crack propagation tests under peak overloads loading sequences have been performed in structural aluminium alloy specimens. All experiments were performed in load control. Crack closure was monitored in all tests by the compliance technique using a pin microgauge. The observed transient crack growth behaviour is discussed in terms of aluminium alloy, load change magnitude and DK baseline levels. The crack closure level is compared with the crack growth transients. Generally, the crack closure level variation is in agreement with the typical experimentally observed crack growth rate response. However, under loading sequences with peak overloads, a good correlation between transient crack growth rates is not attained when parameter DKeff is used. In spite of that, plasticity-induced crack closure plays an important role on the load interaction effects observed in aluminium alloys.
