R-CURVE BEHAVIOR OF OXIDE CERAMICS

Resumen: Brittle ceramics react in a more tolerant way to the presence of defects if toughness rises with crack extension. Macroscopic and micro-mechanical aspects of this R-curve behavior are presented for two oxide ceramics (AI203, MgO partially stabilized ZrO2) and are discussed in terms of crack tip shielding mechanisms.
