Resumen: This paper reviews the quantification of process zones at the roots of notches and cracks, and examines their characterisation by asymptotic solutions. The effect of a local radius at the root of the feature on the validity of the process zone is then considered, and clear guidelines given for what combinations of load and root-radius are acceptable. Finally, a quantitative comparison is made between the solutions for notch roots and crack roots, so that the possibility of treating certain kinds of nearly sharp notches as cracks may be assessed, with a view to deriving crack nucleation predictions.
