Resumen: The cohesive zone description has led to the formulation of a simple expression which gives the maximum sustainable load for a cracked concrete structure in terms of its dimensions and the cohesive zone properties. The strict derivation of this size effect expression applies to the case where the structural dimensions are very large in comparison with the cohesive zone size. By analysis of specific simple models using idealized cohesive zone behaviours, the present paper demonstrates the extent to which the size effect expression can be applied to situations where the dimensions are not necessarily very large.
