THRESHOLD CONDITION FOR PROPAGATION OF A SMALL SHEAR-MODE FATIGUE CRACK IN BEARING STEEL: A REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORKS

Resumen: This paper reviews recent results of the authors’ studies on the near-threshold growth behaviors of small shear-mode fatigue cracks in bearing steel. To understand the rolling-contact fatigue phenomena from the fracture mechanics point of view, it is quite important to conduct a direct observation for the behavior of a small shear-mode crack. Recently, a new experimental method to fulfill the requirement has been proposed by the authors’ group. This approach makes it possible to observe directly the behavior of a sub-millimeter long shear-mode crack on the surface of a specimen and to investigate its threshold condition for propagation. The results obtained in recent works are summarized as follows: (1) the threshold stress intensity factor ranges for modes II and III propagation (?KIIth and ?KIIIth) exhibited a crack-size dependence in the region of small cracks, (2) the mutual interference of crack faces enhanced the threshold values, whose intrinsic value in the absence of interference of crack faces could be defined, (3) the values of ?KIIth and ?KIIIthth were close to each other, and they can be characterized by a single parameter of ?K?th, and (4) a practical equation too estimate the value of ?K?th for an SAE52100 bearing steel was proposed as a function of crack-face interference and crack size by making use of the square root (area) parameter.
