TRANSIENT BEHAVIOUR IN PLASTICITY INDUCED CRACK CLOSURE

Resumen: Experimental fatigue work was developed to quantify the crack increment affected by an overload, aOL. The extent of the overload affected zone increases with KBL, OLR and decreasing R. Depending on the loading variables, the overload affected crack increment can be of the same order as well as much larger than plastic radius (up to 8 times). In the numerical models some crack propagation is required to obtain stabilized PICC values, astab, since a significant residual plastic wake must be formed. Once again, astab does not correlate with rp, and astab/rp ranged between 0.08 and 2.3. The magnitude of the residual plastic wedges, yr, quantified by the integration of p,yy perpendicularly to crack flank, is proposed to control plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) phenomenon and particularly the transient behaviour. A strong link was found between the propagation required for stabilization and yr. An empirical model is proposed, based on this yr and applied successfully to predict PICC for an overload.
